On Friday, April 21, 2023, University of California, Berkeley celebrated breaking ground on the expansion and renovation of UC Berkeley’s Engineering Center. This new home will become a nexus for student collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship at one of the top engineering schools in the country.

The project will adapt the existing Bechtel Engineering Center, adding 35,570 square feet to the former facility with a lightweight glass and steel pavilion. The reimagined Engineering Center will create a dynamic and welcoming space that advances the university’s goals for sustainability, equity, and inclusion.

“Here on this site, students will learn, collaborate and innovate — whether it’s to design, build and launch high-powered rockets or to advance the forefront of 3D bioprinting for applications in reconstructive medicine,” said Tsu-Jae King Liu, Dean of Berkeley Engineering. “Magic happens when people from different backgrounds with diverse perspectives are given space and support to interact with each other day to day, year to year.”
