作为耗资26亿美元的旧金山国际机场扩建项目的核心工程,这座标志性建筑为机场和旧金山市塑造了一个强有力的形象。它还是标志结构设计与建筑设计相融合的分水岭。

航站楼采用造型优美的翼形屋顶,是其弯曲力结构设计的直观表现。一系列由弓弦式桁架连接的双悬臂桁架支撑着屋顶,最大限度降低了对承重立柱的依赖。

加长的天窗和侧天窗让充足的自然光进入建筑内部。主售票大厅敞阔通风,其设计灵感源于欧洲的著名火车站。作为航站楼的诸多可持续性措施之一,大厅内种植着一片天然竹林。

在抗震安全方面,SOM是按照当时针对美国机场航站楼的最高要求进行设计。在这项策略设计上,SOM立志高远,采用了基础隔震技术。
